Popular New Westminster fabric store is closing and customers are upset

Fabricland will soon have one less location in Metro Vancouver, and local makers and crafters are already feeling the loss.
According to an employee at Fabricland at Columbia Square Plaza, its last day is slated for Saturday, June 20, 2026
Longtime customers have shared their sadness over the closure online, with others stating that they have stocked up before Fabricland closes its New Westminster location for good.

“Sad to hear they’re going out of business as they’ve been there so long,” said one commenter on a Facebook post discussing the closure.
“Horrible news,” added another person. “And yes, it’s super busy every day, all the time. Pack your patience.”
A representative from Canada’s largest fabric store chain told Daily Hive that its lease was not renewed as “the building owner has other plans on the premises.”
“Despite the short notice, all staff and customers were informed of the coming store closing, and staff who want to be transferred will have the opportunity to transfer to a nearby location,” the Fabricland team shared in a statement.
“We will be looking for a new place with the right size and lease.”

Fabricland opened its first location in Toronto in 1968 and has grown to over 100 stores offering fabric, sewing supplies, craft items, and more.
A recent visit to the closing New Westminster location revealed deep discounts across the store.
Shoppers were busy picking up supplies and bolts of fabric from the slowly-dwindling shelves.

Many local makers shared their frustration in losing the Fabricland location and having to travel further when working on future projects.
“No more local place for notions and fabric,” shared one person on a recent Reddit discussion.
“This is absolutely tragic,” added another.
“Damn, this sucks. We are losing a really cool store,” shared a third person.
There are two remaining Fabricland locations in the region, located in Vancouver and Surrey.

Vancouver makers are also preparing for the closure of a longtime fabric and sewing supply store in the city.
Nearly two years ago, Dressew Supply first announced it had made the very difficult decision to list its Downtown Vancouver building for sale and eventually permanently close its business.
In late May, the beloved and iconic independent retailer officially announced a closing date, with its permanent shutdown set for next spring.
The closure will bring an end to more than six decades as a cornerstone of Metro Vancouver’s fashion, theatre, and creative communities.
