A small but popular New West restaurant and cafe got a surprise visit from none other than Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
On a busy day of campaigning yesterday, Carney made several stops, including Kozak Ukrainian Eatery.
Kozak is known for its European fair, which includes pierogies and cabbage rolls, both with plant-based options, and fresh baked goods like bread and pastries. They also serve coffee and other beverages.
In a post on X, Carney said Kozak is more than just a small business; “it’s a pillar of the community here in New Westminster.”
And he’s right.
Kozak’s New West location, located at 444 6th St., is always busy. Despite being located in a relatively small storefront, people are always sitting at the seats by the window, enjoying one of the many tasty options it offers.
“Thanks to the staff for the warm welcome and the pastries for the road,” Carney added.

Kozak also shared photos of Carney’s visit in a story on its Instagram page, thanking Carney for the visit.
This isn’t the first time a Prime Minister has visited Kozak, but the last time wasn’t the New West cafe. In 2022, Justin Trudeau visited the Vancouver location on Victoria Drive.
Trudeau said at the time, “I stopped by earlier to pick up some treats, to thank them and their team for their efforts, and to let them all know that Canada stands with Ukraine. Our support remains steadfast.”
