NCAA cancels March Madness basketball tournament

Another domino has fallen in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A day after announcing that March Madness would be played in empty arenas, the NCAA has now decided to cancel both the men’s and women’s Division I basketball tournaments entirely.

The move comes after high-profile schools like Duke and Kansas announced they would be pulling out of the tournament.

March Madness is big business, pulling in massive television ratings and filling large stadiums on an annual basis, not to mention the millions of people who gamble on it. But given the level of heightened awareness around the sporting landscape in North America since the NBA suspended its season following one of its players testing positive for the coronavirus, the decision was a slam dunk.

Virtually every sports league in North America is suspending play, at least temporarily, until they can get a better idea of the new reality we’re facing.
