My Vancouver 2016: John Volken

Dec 20 2017, 3:02 am

Welcome to My Vancouver 2016, a curation of local industry experts, community and thought leaders, each telling us their resolutions for Vancouver in 2016. Since 2008, we’ve been bringing you a bucket list of things to do around the city while also keeping you informed with the many issues in our community. Now, we’re focusing on what’s next: the evolution of our city into something greater, starting with 2016.

What do you do?

I am responsible for and manage the John Volken Academy. Here, we teach about 120 young men and women to adopt a healthy new life-style, develop strong character, receive extensive career training and advance in education.

When did you come to Vancouver?

I moved to Vancouver in 1969.

What do you love most about Vancouver?

Clean streets, beautiful parks, ocean views, mild climate, city life with a touch of small town atmosphere, surrounded by mountains, valleys, forests, farms – to me it’s the most beautiful place on earth.

If you could make one New Year’s resolution for your industry in Vancouver for 2016, what would it be?

While I believe there always has been and always will be a degree of lawlessness and poverty, I wish for Vancouver to empower dedicated people with common sense to do all they can do to eliminate these ills the most effective way possible.
