The Vancouver Whitecaps are off to the MLS Cup Final for the first time in franchise history, and Thomas Müller couldn’t be more excited.
It was a dominant win for the Whitecaps, who dispatched San Diego FC on the road with a 3-1 victory. Forward Brian White was the star of the game, netting two goals in the win, while San Diego goaltender Pablo Sisniega was credited with an own-goal.
There was jubilation after the final whistle, as the Whitecaps officially booked their ticket to an MLS Cup Final against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF. Müller was asked after the match what made this Vancouver squad so great, to which he had a hilarious, matter-of-fact answer.
“Did you watch the game?” Müller asked the reporter with a straight face before breaking into a smile. “We are going from the first second to the last. We have so many warriors, but we are also so skilled as a big group. We have so many strong guys, so many qualities; we have to bring it together.
“We came here to win, we’ve done our job, and now we go to Miami.”
Müller may be the most popular player on the Whitecaps right now, but he did not get on the scoresheet on Saturday night. That’s a testament to his point; Vancouver has so many quality players and doesn’t rely on any one guy to carry the load.
This upcoming final against Miami will be the ultimate test for the club. Müller is no stranger to playing against Messi, having played 10 games against the Argentinian superstar. So far, that record reads 7-3 in favour of the German footballer.
It’s been lopsided in Müller’s favour, but he’s not focusing too much on the past. He’s just happy to get another shot against one of the world’s greatest.
“I wished for this final, and here we go. I think it’s great for everyone,” Müller said. “I enjoy watching [Messi]. I have the feeling Miami is a strong team; we saw them today beating New York today in quite a strong manner.
“Since August, it’s been a Cinderella story, and I try to keep on dancing, like Cinderella is used to.”
The biggest week of preparation in franchise history is now underway for the Whitecaps. They will be playing this final on the road in Miami this upcoming Saturday. The hope is that Müller can deliver one more special moment for the city of Vancouver.
