Two inmates at a medium-security prison in Mission, BC have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Canada’s union representing prison guards.

The Mission medium Institution is now under lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus, the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers said in an emailed statement to Daily Hive.

The union went on to say its concerned for workers’ safety at the prison.

“At the moment, PPE (personal protective equipment) are available to our members that need to interact with the infected inmates but supplies are running low,” the union said.

“PPE requirements to perform our work safely continue to be a source of anxiety among the membership.”

The union is also asking the federal government for more test kits for staff members.

Earlier this month, BC health officials confirmed the province’s first outbreak in a prison setting, at a correctional facility in the Okanagan.

“This is, of course, something that we have been concerned about and planning for,” Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said at the time.
