Inmate at Mission Institution dies from coronavirus complications

An inmate at Mission Institution has died due to complications related to COVID-19, according to Correctional Services Canada.

In a release, CSC said the inmate died at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The individual’s next of kin has been notified of their death.

“CSC extends its condolences to the family. The thoughts of management and staff are with them at this time,” said the federal institution in a release.

CSC has contacted the coroner who will review the circumstances of death.

This is the first death related to COVID-19 among federally sentenced inmates, said CSC.

According to the latest CSC data, there are currently 54 inmates at Mission Institution who have tested positive for the virus.
