A report of a man causing mischief on a BC bridge during last Thursday’s rush hour led to the arrest of a murder suspect wanted in Edmonton.

On Thursday, February 20, at around 5:15 pm, Maple Ridge RCMP were called to the Golden Ears Bridge following multiple complaints from drivers that a man was “throwing rocks and other unknown objects” at moving vehicles.

“The callers provided a succinct description of the alleged suspect, and frontline police officer Constable Vandelft located the suspect and attempted to make contact with the man; however, heavy rush hour traffic made it extremely difficult for the officer to approach and communicate with the suspect,” said a release from RCMP.

According to RCMP, the man jumped over a barricade and began walking in the middle of moving traffic, when the officer also rushed into traffic to push the man to safety and arrest him for mischief.

“The subsequent investigation into the suspect’s identity revealed the man to be Mr. Richard Joseph Lacarte, who has a Canada-wide warrant out of Edmonton for Second-Degree Murder relating to a 2014 investigation,” said the release from RCMP.

Staff Sergeant Ryan Tebb of the Edmonton Police Services Historical Crimes Section says that EPS wants to thank the citizens of Ridge Meadows for their role in this outcome and we thank Constable Vandelft for his commitment in the safe apprehension of this alleged suspect.

Lacarte is in custody and is in the process of being brought to Edmonton to face charges.

According to a statement from an EPS spokesperson, more information will be provided once Lacarte has been formally charged.
