Burnaby’s own Michael Bublé helped pay tribute to a Canadian music icon over the weekend in the nation’s capital, and he got a chance to catch up with a fellow B.C. legend while doing so.

Bublé was part of the star-studded lineup at “k.d. lang: has always been” at National Arts Centre’s Southam Hall on Friday, Oct. 2.

In addition to helping celebrate the musical legacy of Lang, the 15-time Juno Award winner spent some time with Michael J. Fox backstage. And he tipped his hat at their shared Burnaby connection.

“Michael J. Fox is one of the architects of my life,” said Bublé in a social media post.

“Well before I ever imagined that I would meet him, he helped build my imagination. He made movies feel like magic. He made me believe that maybe a kid from Burnaby, Canada, could dream as big as he wanted to.”

Born in Alberta, Fox moved to Burnaby, where he studied before moving to Los Angeles. He moved back to Vancouver after he got married in 1988 to American actor Tracy Pollan, whom he met on the set of the series Family Ties.

Fox was in Ottawa to be elevated to the companion level of the Order of Canada.

“Somehow, all these years later, I’m in even more awe of him,” added Bublé. “There is such an extraordinary outpouring of love for him everywhere he goes. It isn’t nostalgia. It isn’t celebrity. It’s him. His strength, his humour, his grace, his decency, the way he treats people.

“In a world where it can feel increasingly rare to find someone so universally loved. There is Michael J. Fox. He makes me feel good about what it means to be a human being. And really, isn’t that the whole damn point?”

Bublé also shared a moving tribute to Lang, a four-time Grammy and six-time Juno Award winner known for hits like “Constant Craving.”

“There are certain Canadian artists who make all of us walk a little taller, and K.D. Lang has always been one of them.

“She proved that you could be unapologetically yourself and take that voice from Canada to the world. What an honour to celebrate 40 years of your incredible artistry.”
