Special weather statement calls for "heavy downpours" in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver’s rainfall is expected to continue over Friday — in fact, it’s likely to intensify.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the following areas:

  • Metro Vancouver – central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver – North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver – northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge

The weather agency says that “heavy downpours are likely today over the south coast.”

The heavy rainfall is due to “an upper disturbance embedded in a southwest flow of moist, unstable air” that’s moving across the region.

Environment Canada says that “widespread showers and isolated embedded thunderstorms are in store through much of the day.”

Near the North Shore mountains, specifically, residents could see “rainfall rates of 15 to 20 mm within one hour,” as well as localized flooding.

Keep an umbrella handy, Vancouver, and get ready for some rain.
