Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for parts of Metro Vancouver ahead of “heavy rainfall.”

The warning, which was published on Saturday morning, is in effect for the North Shore, including West Vancouver and North Vancouver, and the northeast, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge.

The federal weather authority said that up to 50 millimetres of rain is expected to have fallen over Howe Sound and northern sections of Metro Vancouver by this evening.

The “heavy rain” is expected to end tonight, although showers are expected to continue on Sunday.

“Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” Environment Canada said. “Don’t approach washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.”

Several local mountains have been closed in advance of the inclement weather.
