Why some Metro Vancouver and B.C. landmarks will be lit purple today

If you’re moving around Metro Vancouver today and spot some notable landmarks shining purple, there’s a reason and a good cause behind it.
Landmarks across the province are being illuminated in purple as part of the nationwide Lights for Lupus campaign.
May is Lupus Awareness Month, and Lupus Canada has organized the campaign.
According to a press release, the purple lighting “symbolizes support, awareness, and hope for thousands of Canadians living with lupus.”
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues and organs. It impacts 1 in every 1,000 Canadians, yet according to the press release, the disease “remains widely misunderstood.”
“The Lights for Lupus campaign aims to raise public awareness and foster greater understanding of this life-altering condition.”
To honour the day, the following landmarks will be lit up in Metro Vancouver and across British Columbia.
In Metro Vancouver:
- Vancouver City Hall
- The Burrard Street Bridge
- Science World
- Vancouver Convention Centre
- Arms of the Cauldron
- Municipal Hall in the District of North Vancouver
Across B.C.:
- Fitzsimmons Bridge in Whistler
- Centennial Park in Saanichton
- Victoria Street Bridge in Trail
- Williams Lake City Hall
The lighting will last from dusk to dawn.
Other locations around Metro Vancouver, like Surrey Civic Plaza and the Sails of Light, will be lit purple on other days of the month.
