Metro Vancouver launches 'Adult Toilet Training' campaign and we've got questions

Metro Vancouver has launched a new campaign that is meant to remind adults how to properly use a toilet.

While it seems questionable at first, the regional district’s Adult Toilet Training Campaign has an important message: to prevent millions of dollars of damage to its sewer systems caused by flushing disposable wipes.

In a release, Metro Vancouver noted that when wipes are flushed, they contribute to an array of issues, like backing up sewers, which can damage homes, businesses, and the environment. Even when wipes are labelled as “flushable,” they just don’t break down quickly in sewer systems like toilet paper does.

“Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean your toilet training is over. Too many people are still flushing wipes, causing all kinds of problems in the sewer system,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, chair of the Metro Vancouver board of directors, in a release.

“Most people are already doing the right thing, but we need everyone to remember – only flush pee, poo, and toilet paper.”

This isn’t the first time Metro Vancouver has created a cheeky campaign aimed at bathroom habits.

You may remember back in 2019, when the district introduced us to its new mascots Pee and Poo, for its previous Unflushables campaign.

There is no word on whether Pee and Poo will be making a reappearance anytime soon, but Metro Vancouver says the new Adult Toilet Training campaign will launch this month. Signage about what not to flush will go up in restrooms and elevators across the region.
