Heavy rainfall continues to drench Metro Vancouver, but relief is on the way

Jan 12 2026, 6:23 pm

Metro Vancouver is under a rainfall warning to start the new week, but brighter skies are just around the corner.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow-level weather alert for an atmospheric river that began soaking B.C.’s South Coast over the weekend and into Monday, Jan. 12.

According to Ken Dosanjh, meteorologist with ECCC, the atmospheric river still has a lot of moisture left in it.

“Parts of Metro Vancouver, like Coquitlam, have already received 100 mm of rainfall,” Dosanjh told Daily Hive. “And in West Vancouver and North Vancouver, another 40 to 50 mm is expected today.”

According to the ECCC, up to 150 mm of rain is expected to fall throughout the region during the two-day period of heavy rain.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas,” added ECCC in its warning. “Some travel delays are possible. Landslides may occur in vulnerable areas such as steep slopes, deforested areas or recent burn scars.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”

However, you may not need to keep your umbrellas nearby for much longer, as sunshine begins to make an appearance over Metro Vancouver this week.

Daytime highs could reach up to 14˚C on Saturday, though overnight lows could dip down to 3˚C on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve had a pretty active few weeks of weather systems,” added Dosanjh. “Once this one moves northward, we will be in a shift.

“A ridge of high pressure will become the dominant weather system, with freezing levels rising well above normal. We will have some warm temperatures over the next few days, though some snow melt may occur.”

Dosanjh also warned area residents and commuters that the region may also experience a period of heavy fog later this week.
