McDonald's to source beef from outside Canada due to national shortage

Apr 28 2020, 8:26 pm

McDonald’s Canada has announced that the company will temporarily be sourcing beef from outside the country, citing “unprecedented COVID-19 impacts” on the national beef supply chain.

The fast-food company says the decision relates directly to “current processing capacity limitations” with Canadian beef raw material suppliers, which includes the temporary closure of Cargill in High River, Alberta.

In the interim, the restaurant chain’s beef will come from pre-approved McDonald’s suppliers and facilities globally, in order to meet the current demand, effective immediately.

Additionally, Angus burgers are being temporarily removed from restaurant menus across Canada — this is also effective immediately.

This change will be in effect until the country’s beef supply stabilizes, and in the meantime, McDonald’s will source as much Canadian beef as possible while supplementing with imported beef.

“We know our guests depend on their local McDonald’s and we are committed to doing our part to continue serving our communities during this time.”
