McDonald's puts kale salads on the menu in Canada

McDonald’s is scrambling to find ways to get grown ups to go back to loving eating at their fast food restaurants, and their next big move is to put a trio of kale salads on their menu in Canada.

The Associated Press reports that Canadian McDonald’s restaurants will soon find the trendy supergreen alongside the chain’s well-known staples like the Big Mac and McNuggets:

Mark Kalinowski, an analyst at Janney Capital Markets, said in a report on Wednesday, citing industry sources, that kale will make an appearance in a trio of salads at Canadian McDonald’s restaurants — Caesar, Greek and harvest garden.

The three salads made their Canadian debut on Thursday, May 7. Here are the full details, courtesy McDonald’s Canada:

o ‘Keep Calm, Caesar On’ is our new Caesar salad, made with a premium lettuce blend with baby kale, tasty bacon pieces, shaved parmesan cheese, crunchy croutons, and dressed with a Pure Kraft Asiago Caesar dressing.

o ‘I’m Greek-ing Out’ is a satisfying salad made with delicious red peppers, refreshing cucumbers, crumbled feta cheese, couscous blend, a mix of premium lettuce blend with baby kale, crispy herb and garlic pita chips, and a Pure Kraft Greek Feta dressing.

o ‘Head Over Harvest’ is a flavour-filled salad made with delicious diced apples, red onions, tasty dried cranberries and raisins, shaved parmesan cheese, roasted pumpkin seeds, and a blend of premium lettuce with baby kale, topped with Pure Kraft Sweet Balsamic dressing.

· Our new Salad Bowls are prepared fresh daily and contain eight varieties of lettuce including kale. All of our entrée salads contain four servings of vegetables and our side salads contain two servings of vegetables.

· To enjoy our salads as a meal, add your choice of grilled or crispy 100% seasoned chicken breast, or enjoy it as a smaller side salad without the chicken.

The ubiquitous burger chain has been struggling recently to maintain sales and, in particular, attract millennials. “Increasingly, younger diners are seeking out fresher, healthier food and chains that offer customizable menu options for little more than the price of a combo meal,” the Wall Street Journal reported last year.

And yet, it was just a couple of months ago McDonald’s ran a Big Mac commercial that teased foodies for their affinity for Greek yogurt, quinoa, and, yep, kale.

McDonald’s recently announced their plan to shake things up at their U.S. restaurants by paring down the menu, embracing healthier foods, and experimenting with things like customized burgers and all-day breakfast service.
