The son of hockey legend Mario Lemieux is making a name for himself in a different sport.
Austin Lemieux made his PGA Tour debut Thursday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, shooting a one-over-par 72 in the opening round at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.
The 30-year-old was paired with Luke Clanton and Neal Shipley for his first round on the PGA Tour. Making it even better was that his mom and dad were in attendance to watch him play.

Austin entered the tournament as an amateur after earning his spot through a Monday qualifier. He carded a six-under-par 66 to secure a place in the field, with the score carrying an added connection to his father’s legendary hockey career.

Lemieux, who wore No. 66 during his legendary career, needs little introduction.
The 61-year-old, who spent his entire 915-game career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, is widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. His 1,723 career points rank ninth in NHL history, while his 1.883 points-per-game is second to only Wayne Gretzky.
And while Austin is now pursuing golf, hockey was once his main focus.
He played college hockey at Arizona State University for three seasons before turning his attention to golf in 2020. Since then, he has continued to develop his game through amateur competitions and the Minor League Golf Tour in Florida.
Austin won the Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship in September and has continued to work his way into bigger tournaments.
His PGA Tour debut represents another step in that journey, giving him the opportunity to test himself against some of the best golfers in the world.
While his famous last name is sure to draw attention, Austin will be focused on proving he can compete at the highest level of the sport.
After opening with a 72, he will look to put together a strong second round as he continues his first appearance on golf’s biggest stage.
