On Friday evening, RCMP were deployed to the 9300 block of Salish Court, just west of Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby, to respond to reports of a distressed man with a shotgun.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. when officers discovered the suspect vehicle and the suspect male within the vicinity. Police fired shots at the suspect after he allegedly threatened to harm himself and the officers at the scene.

A witness told Vancity Buzz he heard two continuous gunshots. Seconds of silence then separated the booms of another 20 or more gunshots. From his condo balcony point of view, after the shots were fired he saw three officers approach the suspect vehicle and they moved the suspect towards a patrol car where they performed CPR on him.

As many as a dozen patrol cars were also seen in the neighbourhood securing the area.

According to Burnaby RCMP, no officers or civilians were injured in the incident. The suspect was sent to hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

As police deployed their armed weapons, Burnaby RCMP were required to alert the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. It promptly sent their investigators to the scene to canvass for witnesses and seize any physical evidence in an effort to determine the actions of the officers.

RCMP remains responsible for the investigation on the actions of the suspect and the events that unfolded prior to the police-involved shooting.
