Making our city better: "100In1Day" plans to bring communities together

Do you want to make a difference in your community, but you aren’t sure how? Well, 100In1Day may offer you just the opportunity.

On June 6, the event encourages people to identify what they are most proud of in their community and share it with others. It could be writing a love letter to your neighbourhood, spreading art through local parks or even throwing dance parties in unexpected places.

The phenomenon originated in Bogota, Columbia in 2012 and has spread through the world, from Cape Town to Copenhagen, and now, for the second year in a row, Vancouver.

In the end, it’s about uniting communities and sparking ideas, possibilities and change within them.

You can visit 100In1Day’s website for a list of events, but here’s a taste of what you can expect:

I Need More Cowbell

Cheer on runners, cyclists and walkers out for their morning exercise around the Stanley Park seawall. Cowbells will be provided, but you have to provide the cheers!

When: 8 to 10 a.m.

Where: Third Beach, Stanley Park, Vancouver

#WeAreSurrey

Newton resident Sharon Johal will be posting positive and hopeful messages around Surrey, in English and Punjabi, that showcase the strength and resilience of the community.

When: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Newton Town Centre, Surrey

West End Arts Jam

The first of several West End Art Jams planned for 2015, Chris Hyndman will be gathering local musicians and artists for an afternoon of public art at Bute Plaza. 

When: 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Where: Bute and Davie Street, Vancouver

Women + Water Walk

Discover the stories of the St. George Rainway in an interactive walk led by women. All ages, genders and cultures are welcome. A collaboration by Lost Rivers Vancouver, St. George Rainway Project and the False Creek Watershed Society.

When: 2 to 4 p.m.

Where: Kingsway at St. George Street, Vancouver

A Place of Our Own Nature Play & Scavenger Hunt

Led by the United Way Avenues of Change, bring your children out to Coquitlam River for a nature scavenger hunt! This scavenger hunt will promote play and social interaction in natural spaces.

When: 9 to 11 a.m.
