After Craigslist, the popular classified listing site, updated their personal safety page to suggest users “consider making high-value exchanges at your local police station”, the Vancouver Police Department has given their support to the idea.
The Vancouver Police lobby is open to anyone buying or selling something on Craigslist, and Constable Brian Montague of the VPD told The Province newspaper recently that he thinks scammers would be reluctant to make a fake transaction at a police station.
Just this past weekend, fans of Maroon 5 were soured by a fake ticket scam that left “a few hundred” people outside of the Sunday night show at Rogers Arena.
Because the kinds of scams are all too common, Craigslist suggests a few precautions to make sure you get what you pay for and stay safe. Advice includes meeting at a public place with lots of people around, being especially careful when buying or selling high-price items, telling a friend or family member where you’re going, keeping your cell phone with you, not going alone and trusting your instincts.
The VPD also recommends that you check the ID and take the picture of the person selling to you.
