Macarons in Vancouver: Soirette Macarons and Tea

Dec 19 2017, 2:14 pm

For those who love daring tastes with sweet confectioneries, Soirette is one macaron shop you will not forget. Located on West Pender in Downtown Vancouver, this little gem shines brightly with its colourful and exquisite macarons.

The store is not situated in the busiest part of Downtown, so the area is small. There are some small tables inside, and a couple outside for those who want to enjoy their macarons and tea on a sunny day. Don’t be fooled by it’s small exterior though, colourful surprises are hidden inside.

Once inside, you are greeted with a big display of macarons. Between their regular macarons, macaron of the day, and seasonal macarons, there are approximately 20 flavours to choose from.

Macarons are $2 individually,  6 for $11.50, and 12 for $22. With so many flavours, how could one pass up buying a box?

Back from left to right: Black Olive, Rose, Lavender. Front from left to right: Strawberry Cheesecake, Pineapple Wasabi, Mango and Black Pepper

Did I hear (or read) correctly? Mango and black pepper? Pineapple wasabi? Black olive? Soirette goes the extra mile to bring flavours to tantalize those taste buds. Additionally, the macaron of the day was the strawberry cheesecake with a cream cheese filling in the centre.

The Rose macaron had a French rose buttercream, and it was pink, and aromatic. If you love flowers, this is delicious! The Lavender macaron is infused with lavender tea and a white chocolate ganache. Personally, I wished there was more floral flavour, but those with a super sweet tooth would love the chocolate in this. The Black Olive tastes just like an olive, only biting into a cookie flavoured olive. There was no sweetness, just the flavour of chewy, crispy olives. It was authentic and savoury.

The Mango and Black Pepper was absolutely flavour-tastic.It has a mango puree and white chocolate ganache. Rich mango flavour and a spicy kick from peppercorn in the aftertaste.

The Strawberry Cheesecake macaron  was the first to be consumed. It was recommended to be eaten within 24 hours, because the cream cheese would make the macaron soggy. After half an hour, the macaron looked a bit flat already. This was really chewy with a light shell, and there were bits of jam in it. The garnishes on top of the shell and the colour contrast made this a truly delectable treat.

Apart from the Mango and Black Pepper macaron from being a personal favourite, the Pineapple Wasabi macaron was another interesting combination. There were shreds of pineapple inside the filling, and the wave of wasabi really hits you right in the throat, in a good way. Sweet and zingy, this new macaron flavour left a memorable impression. Each macaron had a consistent texture, with a light, soft shell and creamy filling.

Bring your taste buds to a culinary adventure at Soirette, because some of these flavours cannot be found anywhere else. I recommend you to be daring with your choices because they are truly worthwhile. Indulge in the savoury and the sugary; Soirette finds a way of marrying these two beautifully.
