Luke Schenn is a member of the Vancouver Canucks once again.

The 36-year-old defenceman has signed with the Canucks in free agency, inking a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.

This is the third tour of duty with the Canucks for Schenn, who was acquired in a trade in 2019 and was a free agent signing in 2021. They last traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2023.

The fit is obvious for Schenn and the Canucks, who are looking to repair a broken dressing room. Schenn is well respected around the league and will provide leadership and mentorship to a young Vancouver team.

“Bringing Luke back to Vancouver is an important move for our club,” said Canucks GM Ryan Johnson. “Not only is he familiar with our market, but Luke is a veteran leader who can help some of our younger players learn and grow. His experience, voice and popularity in the dressing room will help us set the proper tone for the upcoming season.”

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound blueliner brings size, though he does lack foot-speed. Schenn is a depth defenceman at this stage of his career, averaging under 14 minutes of ice time last season, which was split between the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres.

Schenn has 1,122 games of NHL experience, with stops in Toronto, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Arizona, Anaheim, Vancouver, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Winnipeg, and Buffalo.

This was the second signing of the day for Johnson, who also inked former New Jersey Devils winger Paul Cotter on a one-year contract.
