22,000 sq. ft. Loblaws City Market opens this month at South Granville SkyTrain tower

The South Granville retail village of Vancouver will soon gain a new anchor retailer, located just kitty corner from the Indigo Granville bookstore.

It was announced this week that during the very first week of Summer 2026, Loblaws City Market will open its new grocery store location at the 2025-built The Stories tower at 1461 West Broadway — the northeast corner of the prominent intersection of Granville Street and West Broadway.

This mixed-use tower is also highly notable for being the entrance into SkyTrain’s future South Granville Station, with the subway station entrance situated at the building’s corner with the intersection.

Loblaws City Market South Granville will span 22,000 sq. ft., with most of its space spanning the second level of the building and a small portion of the ground level at the middle of the block for the grocery store’s entrance.

This grocery store will open its doors for the first time at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026. It will be Loblaws City Market’s third location within the city of Vancouver, following the Arbutus Street (on West 16th Avenue) store and the 45,000 sq. ft. flagship store at The Post in Downtown Vancouver.

The subway station will open in late 2027, when SkyTrain’s overall Millennium Line Broadway extension reaching Arbutus begins service.

The 39-storey tower was developed by PCI Developments and designed by Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership. As a public benefit in partnership with the provincial government, the tower was originally required to be completed in time for the anticipated late 2025 opening of the subway to provide South Granville Station with an entrance on opening day. However, delays to the subway project pushed the Millennium Line extension’s opening day — first to early 2026 and later to the Fall 2027.

In addition to the grocery store, there is over 7,000 sq. ft. of retail/restaurant space on the ground level, activating the building’s frontages with West Broadway and Granville Street. A cafe is also planned immediately adjacent to the entrance into the subway station. So far, the only other publicly confirmed retail/service tenant is the return of Royal Bank of Canada to the site.

Additionally, the exterior of the ground-level corner entrance into the subway station and cafe features a column with an Indigenous public art work wrap.

Directly above the grocery store, within the remaining levels of the base podium, The Stories contains about 106,000 sq. ft. of office space, with Nicola Wealth Management leasing over 38,000 sq. ft. across two levels.

The remaining levels of the tower above the base podium are used for 226 secured purpose-built rental homes, including 181 market rental unit and 44 below-market rental units.

With a height of 422 ft., The Stories is the tallest building on the Broadway corridor, exceeding the Jim Pattison Pavilion tower of Vancouver General Hospital.

The general area will also gain a second grocery store in the near future, when Vancouver’s first FreshCo discount grocery store —  a brand of Sobeys — opens within the former Toys ‘R’ Us building at 1154 West Broadway, about three blocks to the east of The Stories and the subway station. This store is expected to be roughly 29,000 sq. ft. in size.
