Fake No Name ad in Calgary gets a major reaction online

Jun 11 2024, 11:26 pm

Editorial note June 20, 2024, 11:30 am: Loblaws has since confirmed this was a photoshopped image.

Loblaws has been in the hot seat with Canadians for some time now, with many calling out the grocery store chain for skyrocketing prices.

The frustration from people across Canada with the chain over a multitude of issues, including shrinkflation, has inspired boycotts of Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and Shopper’s Drug Mart, among others.

Now, it looks as though Canadians are finding even more creative ways to take aim at the chain with a fake advertisement spotted mocking the brand.

In the subreddit Loblaws Is Out of Control, user hexagonbest4gon shared an image of the poster they spotted on 9th Street near Gulf Canada Square in downtown Calgary.

Saw this in downtown Calgary. Props to whoever designed it

While at a glance, the poster could definitely be mistaken for the real thing, the sign reads “peasants,’ accompanied by an image of a Loblaws’ brand No Name cake mix. To top it off, it has the infamous quote often associated with Marie Antoinette: “Let them eat cake.”

Many Canadians are here for the sign, praising its creativity and the fact that from a distance, you would actually believe the ad was from Loblaws.

Others joked about other additions that could be made to the sign, including needing to buy even more ingredients.

There were even suggestions on other Loblaws-owned brands that could be launched.

In response to the poster, Loblaw told Dished that it is aware and investigating.
