You can legally bet on the US presidential election in BC

There’s a lot on the line for Tuesday’s US presidential election, in more ways than one.

PlayNow.com, BC’s legal sports gambling website owned by the provincial government, is offering bettors the opportunity to gamble on outcome.

Move over Super Bowl, because the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) expects this to be the “single-most popular betting event in the history of PlayNow.com,” with approximately 10,000 bets expected. BCLC was the first jurisdiction in Canada to offer novelty betting on the US election, doing so through PlayNow.com in 2014.

Joe Biden is the heavy favourite, with odds currently at 1.55. Trump, meanwhile, has odds listed at 2.45.

BC bettors have so far been placing their money on Trump, according to BCLC, with 44% of bets putting money on the American president to win a second term. Just 27% of bettors have put money on Biden so far, with other non-candidates accounting for the remaining 29%.

The odds are even more lopsided if you want to bet on who will win the popular vote, with Biden’s Democrats odds at 1.14 versus 5.75 for Trump’s Republicans.

Other betting options include betting if Trump can win any state that he didn’t win in 2016, as well as betting on the precise popular vote percentage or electoral college vote tally for either candidate.

BCLC expects this election will smash its previous record for a single event, when approximately 7,200 bets were placed on the 2016 US election — making it more popular than any sporting event.
