Could a former NHL captain be joining the Vancouver Canucks front office soon?
It appears things are starting to near the finish line in Vancouver’s search for its next GM. Less than a month after firing Patrik Allvin, it appears the shortlist for his successor is down to two names: Boston Bruins AGM Evan Gold and current Canucks AGM Ryan Johnson.
If the Canucks opt to give the job to Gold, it could be a sort of package deal for Vancouver’s management group. Longtime Vancouver sports reporter Bob Marjanovich reported that Jamie Langenbrunner could also come to Vancouver if Gold is hired as GM.
“IF Gold get the Canucks job, don’t be surprised if Jamie Langenbrunner follows him to Vancouver,” Marjanovich reported.

The 50-year-old Langenbrunner is best remembered for his lengthy NHL career, playing for the Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, and St. Louis Blues between 1994 and 2013. During that time, he won a pair of Stanley Cups, one with the Stars in 1999 and another with the Devils in 2003.
Langenbrunner ended his playing career with 663 points over 1109 NHL games and was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023.
Recently, however, Langenbrunner has worked alongside Gold with the Boston Bruins as a fellow AGM. He has been in that role for the past four seasons and was Boston’s director of player development for the three years prior to being promoted to the AGM job.
He certainly has the experience needed to join the Canucks management group, and if Gold is hired to lead the way, it would make sense that he would also bring Langenbrunner along for the ride.
As it stands, the Canucks currently employ Johnson, Émilie Castonguay, and Cammi Granato as AGMs. If Gold is brought into the fold, who knows what other changes could be coming to that group this summer?
Only time will tell.
