If you suddenly find yourself craving tacos in the West End, head to La Catrina, a new spot serving Mexican street food. The Denman Street taco shop opens Monday, March 14.
The vibrantly-coloured quick-service eatery is a new venture from three friends (who all hail from Mexico and previously worked at Vancouver’s popular La Taqueria) looking to make real-deal tacos for Vancouverites.
La Catrina’s menu features a mouthwatering range of tacos, quesadillas, and fajitas, which are for the most part presented on corn tortillas (there’s also a corn and bean tortilla option). Fillings include Carnitas (confit pork and red pickled onion), Cachete (slow-cooked beef cheeks), Hongos Al Ajillo (mushrooms in garlic and chili sauce), and tuna with a special sauce.

The tacos are all priced at $3, with the exception of the fish taco, which is $4, and are topped with fresh locally-sourced ingredients. Vegetarian and vegan options are aplenty and everything on the menu is gluten-free, excluding the Mole sauce.
Diners can customize their meals at the side counter, where they’ll find bowls holding traditional garnishes–pickled onions and grilled jalapeños, chipotle sauce, and other condiments.
The 10-seat restaurant also offers a variety of popular Mexican beverages, including an ice-cold horchata (rice drink), and a few types of Jarritos soft drinks.
