Like them or not, bike lanes are here to stay and another new bike lane has been proposed for the Kitsilano Beach area.
This separated bike lane is not to be confused with the already approved $6 million Point Grey Bike Lane. The Kitsilano Beach Bike lane will be a separated ‘greenway’ that links Vanier Park to Kitsilano Beach Park.
In Vancouver, bike lanes have been a contentious issue for residents, especially for those that don’t live in the city’s core. However, for many people that live in the core, bike lanes are welcome mode of transportation.
Vancouver has recently been on a bike lane building boom in anticipation of the soon to be introduced Vancouver Bike Share Program. However, it’s a program many feel is destined to fail due to the provincial government’s road safety laws on mandatory helmets while cycling.
A vote will be held on Monday, October 7. Once approved, and let’s not kid ourselves as it will be approved, expect construction to commence shortly. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2014.
