You can help set a new Guinness World Record at Cypress Mountain this month

Every Vancouverite knows that the summertime means getting out to hiking trails all around the region. And this year, you can take your love of the great outdoors to the next level at Cypress Mountain.

Kathmandu, a popular New Zealand-based outdoor brand, is celebrating its entrance into the Canadian marketplace by hosting the free Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Not only is the event attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the “most people hiking simultaneously,” it’s also helping to raise funds for several local non-profit organizations.

“Our goal with Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike is to encourage people to get outside to experience the physical and mental benefits that the outdoors provides, while raising money for local organizations that make a difference,” said Nick Russell, general manager of KMD Brands Canada, in a release.

“This event is not only about setting a world record, but also inspiring people to connect with nature in a sustainable and meaningful way.”

Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike will see up to 2,000 participants gather on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 30, to trek up the 4 km path to the top of Sky Quad. The route is described as moderate in terrain and difficulty.

For the attempt to count towards the record, everyone will need to hike at the same time for at least 10 continuous minutes. At the end of the hike, you will either trek back down the Cypress Mountain path or take the  Sky Quad or Lions Express Quad chairs.

The free event is open to all ages and skill levels, with children who are comfortable hiking welcome to participate.

And the fun continues at the base of the mountain with live music, informative vendor sessions, and a variety of food and beverages available for purchase.

The Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike is also supporting local community partners BC Parks Foundation, North Shore Rescue, and Take a Hike Foundation. Participants can support the important organizations by purchasing t-shirts, water bottles and other merchandise, with 100 per cent of proceeds being split among the beneficiaries.

Those choosing to ride a Sky Quad or Lions Express Quad chair down will also be supporting the non-profits, as half of the proceeds from ticket sales will be split evenly between Take a Hike Foundation, BC Parks Foundation, and North Shore Rescue.
