During a phone call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today, US Vice President Kamala Harris “fondly” recalled her years spent in Montreal, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
In a readout, the PMO said Trudeau and Harris discussed a “wide range of issues,” from promoting diversity and inclusion to the importance of mental health, as well as the need to address online hate, firearm trafficking, and gender-based violence.
According to the PMO, Trudeau also congratulated Harris on her “historic election” and said he was looking forward to working with the new US administration “on shared priorities, including fighting the COVID-19 pandemic through close collaboration on borders and access to vaccines, and to building back better.”

The PMO said Trudeau and Harris welcomed opportunities for Canada-US cooperation in leading global action to fight climate change and that Trudeau also “highlighted the importance of strengthening North American energy security.”
During the call, the pair also agreed “on the centrality of democratic principles and respect for rule of law and justice as values that Canada and the US share. They spoke of the need to increase trust in government through greater transparency and effective delivery of services.”
The PMO said that both Trudeau and Harris “looked forward to the upcoming bilateral meeting between Trudeau and President Joe Biden.
