B.C.'s popular Juan de Fuca Trail to remain closed this summer

A well-known hiking trail along the west coast of Vancouver Island will be closed for the entire summer along with popular beach camping spots along the route.

B.C.’s Ministry of Environment and Parks issued a news release Thursday stating that the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail will remain closed through summer 2025 as workers repair damage caused by fall and winter storms.

“Several key sections of the 47-kilometre trail have been washed away or blocked by fallen trees, making the trail impassable and unsafe for hikers. There is also extensive damage to bridges, boardwalks, shelters, and campsites,” the Ministry said.

Campgrounds at the following beaches along the trail are also closed:

  • Bear Beach
  • China Beach
  • West Sombrio Beach
  • Little Kuitsche Creek
  • Payzant Creek

Day-use and camping are still allowed at Mystic Beach and East Sombrio Beach. The day-use areas at China Beach and Botanical Beach are open, too.

The Ministry said repairs to the rugged, multi-day Juan de Fuca Trail will be completed in phases, and updates will be available via their website.
