Jollibee to open its second location in Metro Vancouver in new building

Metro Vancouver’s second Jollibee restaurant location will open within the Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre complex in Surrey.

Daily Hive Dished is the first to report that the Philippine fast food giant is planning to construct a new purpose-built standalone restaurant building at 12101 72 Avenue, located at the southern end of the mall, near the northeast corner of the intersection of 120 Street and 72 Avenue.

The site, currently vacant, is wedged between OkTire Auto Service and Quiznos, and is within a short walking distance from TransLink’s Scottsdale Exchange bus loop.

Plans for the restaurant call for a new 3,347 sq. ft. building with a contemporary design and a patio along 72 Avenue. Vancouver-based WA Architects is behind the building design.

The immensely popular overseas fast food chain is known for its unique take on savoury comfort staples, specifically fried chicken, mash potatoes, burgers, hot dogs, and spaghetti. It is deemed as a fusion of Asian and Western flavours.

Earlier this year, Daily Hive Dished first reported Jollibee’s plans to open its first location at 833 Granville Street — just south of Robson Street, within the Granville Entertainment District in downtown Vancouver — occupying the former unit of ShuRaku Sake Bar & Bistro, which closed in September 2018.

A number of Jollibee locations have already opened in and around Toronto, including a Yonge Street location in downtown Toronto.

Precise opening dates for the downtown Vancouver and Strawberry Hill locations are not known at this time.

But this is all part of Jollibee’s aggressive international expansion plan; prior to COVID-19, it announced a strategy to open 250 locations across North America by 2023.

In a release earlier this month, the company said it opened 12 locations in the North American market in 2020 even under pandemic conditions, and there are plans to open 28 additional locations in 2021, including nine in Canada.

The company, in its performance update, also doubled down on its pre-pandemic expansion plans, with a recalibrated goal of having 300 locations in North America by 2024.

“We have remained nimble and optimistic which has led Jollibee to defy expectations amidst an extremely difficult year and experience double-digit sales growth across North America,” said Maribeth Dela Cruz, president of Jollibee Group North America, Philippine Brands, in a statement.

The company currently has over 1,400 locations globally in about two dozen countries.

As for other future development at Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre, the property’s owner, RioCAN Real Estate Investment Trust, has longer term plans to redevelop the mall into a vibrant mixed-use centre. Most of the 26-acre site is currently under-utilized as surface parking. Redevelopment plans are in the initial planning phases.
