JJ Bean opens 17th location, a hub for Cambie Village coffee lovers
Local coffee chain JJ Bean has officially opened in the heart of Cambie Village.
John Neate Jr. (JJ) created JJ Bean in 1996. “The original vision for JJ Bean was to honour people through coffee, customer service, food and amazing spaces,” says Neate. When expanding to new locations, JJ Bean looks for distinct communities that they can share these things with. The hope is that this location will become a hub for residents of Cambie Village to enjoy quality coffee and a beautiful space.
The previous occupant of this space, the Cambie General store, was a fixture of Cambie Village for years. Many members of the Cambie community held the store, as well as the “Face of Vancouver” mural featured on the side of the building, in very high-regard. Neate wanted to retain this connection to the historic Cambie community when making decisions around design for the new shop.
Colours from the original mural are shown in the stripes that now don the south side of the building and the Cambie General Store sign will remain visible under the new JJ Bean signage. “This signifies a tie to the roots of the community, but also a step towards the next generation of architecture for this neighbourhood,” says Neate.

Shop visitors will enjoy plenty of natural light with skylights and floor to ceiling windows. A 16 seat south-facing patio will open in late April, so customers can enjoy the sunshine while sipping coffee. The space feels modern, but inviting, with subway tiles and hardwood tables. There is ample seating to let you linger, study, and socialize over a coffee and fresh baked treat. This location features the quality coffee and delicious sandwiches and pastries found at other JJ Beans, with one surprising addition. To honor the iconic Coca Cola sign on the Cambie General Store, this is the only JJ Bean location that serves Coke. Whether you are a resident of Cambie Village or not, this café is definitely worth a visit.
