Jill Barber to perform live concert in virtually reconstructed Vancouver venue

Let’s just say it. We all desperately miss live music. 

Have you been sitting in the dark, watching video after recommended video of concert footage from twelve years ago, sound up as loud as your laptop will go? Do you find yourself holding your lighter out in front of the screen, waiting desperately for the return of concerts? It can’t be just us.

To help free us from this YouTube rabbit hole, Jill Barber, alongside the talented people at Shocap, are creating a live performance at Vancouver’s historic Palomar Supper Club on Friday, November 20. Well, sort of.

For those who don’t know, the Palomar was demolished over 65 years ago. So how is this possible exactly? Magic or technology? A bit of both.

Shocap Entertainment, through visual effects, motion capture, and extreme virtual reality, have recreated the Palomar Theatre as it stood from 1937 to 1955 — only now in a virtual setting. Not only will you be able to attend a live concert, but you can travel back in time to an amazing building that’s no longer here.

The venue won’t be the only thing digitally created by these talented visual effects artists. In what will undoubtedly be a unique and innovative live musical performance, Jill Barber and her Phantom Jazz Band will be brought to life by Shocap using motion capture technology. These visual effects will enhance the on-stage performances in real time.

Jill Barber will bring her famous array of musical styles, like folk, vocal jazz, pop, and songs in both French and English. She will be herself, but her back-up band will be digitally re-imagined, perfect for a resurrected building. 

In this intimate blending of nostalgia and technology, of real-world and virtual settings, this is a brand new way to attend a concert. Trust us, this will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. 

Shocap Entertainment is a partnership with veterans in the film and video game industry, Lifelike & Believable Animation Design and Animatrik Film Design.

The recent resumes of this partnership is incredibly impressive and speaks for itself. Working out of Burnaby and Los Angeles, Animatrik’s credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Avengers: Endgame, Aquaman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Gears of War 5, Ready Player One, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
