If there’s one time to finally wear jeans during quarantine, it’s this month

May 1 2020, 4:18 pm

For most of us living in this strange new reality, putting on our favourite pair of jeans has become a distant memory. Sweatpants and activewear have become our new denim.

But if there’s one time during these uncertain months that you should skip the yoga pants and get out your Canadian tuxedo, it should be during May, when you can give back to our sick and injured kids and incredible healthcare workers.

We’re talking about the BC Children’s Hospital JeanUp fundraiser. This year, it’s more important than ever that you participate to give back to the healthcare community.

The annual province-wide fundraiser, previously known as Jeans Day, is celebrating its 30th year in 2020 and has evolved into a month-long initiative. During the entire month of May, simply putting on your best denim outfit and posting a picture to social media can help sick and injured kids get out of their hospital gowns and back into their own jeans.

Just make sure you use the hashtag #JeanUp, tag @bcchf, and use the JeanUp Instagram stickers to show your support for a great cause! Any donation you’re able to make at this time will go straight towards the hospital’s foundation — to help healthcare workers and sick kids get back to their normal lives.

Every year, tens of thousands of kids come to BC Children’s Hospital, the only children’s hospital in the province. Some of the patients undergo highly specialized surgery, chemotherapy, and physiotherapy to recover from injuries.

Ensuring each kid is given the best health care possible at BC Children’s is already a huge undertaking. However, during an unprecedented pandemic, it’s now even more challenging.

At BC Children’s, physical distancing due to COVID-19 has impacted children’s ability to see many of their loved ones and has closed playrooms and limited bedside activities. This time has made them feel more isolated than ever.

A pandemic also puts even more strain on families who have sick or injured children in the hospital, as the health of those in the hospital is put at an even higher risk. This is not to mention the financial stress families are going through — impacting their jobs, homes, and simply getting their next meal.

Health care providers caring for kids at BC Children’s are also taking a hit when it comes to their mental health, as they push through working in extraordinary circumstances, dealing with huge obstacles like the shortage of supplies, and the health of their patients.

By giving back during this uncertain time, you can help make sure that the rapidly evolving needs of sick and injured kids are met by expert care — so kids can get back into their jeans sooner.

“BC Children’s has been designated one of the 19 primary COVID hospital care sites — which means that every child in our province who requires intensive care due to the virus will be treated here,” says Teri Nicholas, President and CEO at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “During these trying and uncertain times, health care providers at BC Children’s Hospital continue to do what they’ve always done: ensure our kids get the best possible care.”

Want to participate but don’t have your Canadian tuxedo down yet? As part of JeanUp, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will be giving away two gift cards to the denim retailer Mavi, worth $250 each. Mark your calendars! The contest goes live on Daily Hive Vancouver’s Instagram on May 11.

If you’re looking to help regain some normalcy in both your own life and the lives of sick and injured kids, this May is the time to put on your jeans again. Just make sure you take a photo and share it on social media and use the hashtag #JeanUp.

And if you’re interested in donating to this incredible cause, don’t delay! Head on over to the BC Children’s Hospital website.
