Celebrate International Dance Day: 4 ways to get your dance on

In 1982, the International Dance Council (CID) – part of UNESCO – established the International Dance Day celebrated in every country of the world on April 29.

Each year, a message from an international dance artist is circulated and one is choose in Canada. This year, the Canadian message is an inspiring video delivered by bboy Luca ‘Lazylegz’ Patuelli.

Everyone can become a dancer on today, International Dance Day! Across Metro Vancouver, celebrate this day with dance events for all kind of audience! Here’s four ways to get your dance on.

1. The Dance Centre

The Dance Centre presents rich programs of free events all around Metro Vancouver.

At lunch time, South Asian Arts + Aché Brasil will perform an energetic mix of bhangra and capoeira (Vancouver Public Library) and Port-O-Swing Vancouver Dance School will offer free lesson and a demonstration of swing! (Vancouver Art Gallery South Plaza). In the early afternoon, young students will perform a Bollywood piece (Vancouver Art Gallery South Plaza).

Moreover there will be three free dance shows starting from 5:30 p.m.: Polymer Dance presents an outdoor site-specific piece at Emery Barnes Park and a Triple Bill with choreographies of Vancouver-based Katie de Vries, Thoenn Glover and Daisy Thompson
(Scotiabank Dance Centre). To end the dancing day, Justine A. Chambers will show her new work, SPLAY, created with Modus Operandi training program.

2. ivivva West 4th Ave

The official flash mob “ivivva Dance Out” will take place at Robson Square. This event is the officially kick-off of the ivivva “Dance Out” project. The event is free for girls of all ages and dance levels.

3. Surrey Arts Centre 

Surrey Arts Centre presents a fusion of dance, sounds and cultures. XBa DanceCo, in collaboration with Zavichaj Serbian Folk Dance Group, Sudnya Dance Academy and guest Serbian Drums player Dragan Markovic, singer Sri Ramshakthi and Tabla player Amarjeet Singh Vabhan.

4. Richmond Arts Centre

The Richmond Arts Centre presents a 45-minute ballet barre class, free and for all levels, on the Minoru Plaza (7700 Minoru Gate) at noon.
