An iconic Canadian sandwich has made a prestigious list of the best in the world.
CNN recently named 25 of the world’s best sandwiches that can inspire your next trip, and there are plenty of bites to choose from.
“Is there a food more humble yet universally adored than the sandwich?” reads the report.
“And while one person’s go-to hamburger snack might be another’s katsu sando or chivito, there’s hardly a country on the planet that doesn’t turn to some type of bread with something stuffed inside it to cure a craving.”
A staple in Eastern Canada made the list — the Montreal smoked meat sandwich.

The sandwich, which is mainly found in Quebec, is made with smoked beef brisket stacked between slices of light rye bread and topped with tangy yellow mustard.
“The best briskets used in a true Montreal smoked meat sandwich are said to soak for up to two weeks in brine and savoury aromatics such as coriander, peppercorn and garlic before being smoked and hand-sliced to go down in eternal sandwich glory,” described CNN.
Its place on the list is definitely deserved. Tourists flock to Montreal to get a taste of the iconic sandwich, most notably at the famous Schwartz’s Deli.

It’s one of the oldest delis in Canada and has been serving up delicious smoked meat in sandwiches and poutine for over 90 years. Even if it’s been a Montreal landmark for decades, it still draws lines of foodies who want a delectable bite of the sandwich.
Montreal’s smoked meat is in good company on CNN’s list alongside Vietnam’s bánh mì, the Middle Eastern shawarma, and the United States’ Philly cheesesteak.
This isn’t the only time CNN has lauded Montreal for its food scene. In December, the city took the second spot as one of the best food destinations in the world.
