How to plan the ultimate cosplay at Fan Expo Vancouver 2020

Fan Expo Vancouver, one of British Columbia’s largest pop-culture events, is just over two weeks away.

While there are plenty of events and activities to look forward to, one of the biggest highlights of the weekend is the costumes and cosplaying that take place. While it isn’t necessary at Fan Expo Vancouver, it’s a great way to show your creative side and even meet new people.

Organizers say that one-in-four attendees will arrive in some form of costume, ranging from superheroes, comic book characters, and everything sci-fi. Here are some tips to help you find your perfect costume and knock it out of the park:

Pick your passion (and your price)

Cosplay (which comes from the term costume play) is in the eye of the beholder. The inspiration can come from a favourite movie, a childhood comic book character, or from any genre imaginable.

The costume can be as in-depth or as simple as the cosplayer chooses, as well as expensive, or budget-friendly as one chooses. Putting extra effort into the hair, props, and makeup is also a great way to push a costume an extra mile.

Play by the rules

There’s no doubt that a good prop is like the cherry on top of your costume. Keep in mind, however, that Fan Expo attendees can’t bring in actual weapons. Any weapons or props that are part of a costume must be in plain sight at all times and must first be inspected by staff or security.

As a general rule, no metal props are allowed. Security will also have the final decision on if a prop is allowed into the event.

Ask and be respectful before you take photos

Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or new to the cosplay scene, Fan Expo Vancouver is a great way to gain more knowledge and meet other people in the industry. If you’re looking to take a photo with another cosplayer, be sure to ask permission — chances are that they’re happy to show off and discuss their work, but it’s always best to be respectful first.

Walk the red carpet

Get ready for the cosplay red carpet! There’s no pre-registration and no competition involved, but it’s a great opportunity to have fun, show off your costume, and have a free photo taken by an official Fan Expo Vancouver photographer.

Take part in the costume contest

If you’re really looking to see how your costume stacks up, consider participating in the costume contest! The event will feature fans showcasing original costume from every genre and there’s even a $500 cash prize for “Best in Show.”

Judging is based on fabrication, materials, fit and presentation, adaptation, on-stage presentation, and audience impact. There’s even a contest for kids aged 12 and under, as well as a mini-contest for couples.
