Vancouver Canucks centre Pius Suter has been the epitome of consistency thus far in his career.
In each of his four NHL seasons before this one, he scored either 14 or 15 goals. This season, as a pending unrestricted free agent, he’s blown through that milestone and is sitting at 20 goals with 14 games to play, tied for second on the team.
The offensive breakout could not have come at a better time for Suter, as he can hit the open market on July 1. With his offensive touch, versatility, and all-around play, there’s no doubt he’s in line for a major raise.
“He scored his 20th, I told him after the game, ‘cha-ching,'” said Rick Tocchet last night. “That’s a cha-ching goal.”
The Canucks and Suter have reportedly not made any meaningful progress on contract negotiations, as the two sides are far apart. He was nearly moved at the trade deadline, but the Canucks ended up keeping him, and they’re a much better team for it.
Suter can play as a top-six winger or a middle-six centre and has featured in both roles for the Canucks. He’s had some huge goals, including the series-winning marker against the Nashville Predators last year.
The 28-year-old is also the most-used Canucks penalty killer this season, and the unit has been excellent, tied for third in the league. He often takes on hard matchups at five-on-five and is one of the Canucks more reliable defensive centres.
“He’s a really smart guy,” added Tocchet. “I’ve given him some tough assignments this year… he’s just a smart guy. Everyone says, ‘Well you know his foot speed,’ but he looks like he’s fast out there to me because he’s got a good brain. Can score 20 goals, shut down the other team’s best line, that’s great for us.”
Hockey consulting company AFP Analytics projects Suter’s next contract for four years and $3.927 million. That would be more than double his current $1.6 million cap hit and appears to not be a number the Canucks are willing to approach, although maybe they will reconsider as he continues to prove his value to the team.
