Huge vehicle fire on Highway 1 sends plumes of smoke sky high in Metro Vancouver

Traffic is still moving slowly through a huge stretch of Highway 1 in Metro Vancouver after a large vehicle fire sent plumes of smoke into the air on Tuesday
DriveBC posted updates to the social media platform X, alerting drivers and commuters that a westbound vehicle fire reduced Highway 1 to a single lane at Willingdon Avenue.
Eastbound drivers were also affected, as the HOV lane was initially blocked while an ambulance and fire trucks responded to the scene.

No further information, including any injuries or the cause of the incident, has been released at this time by authorities.
However, traffic snarled throughout the morning in the Burnaby Lake stretch of Highway 1 westbound, with traffic slow just after the Gagliardi Exit.

Parts of Lougheed Highway heading east from Burnaby to Vancouver also slowed in the early afternoon on Feb. 24.
Luckily for drivers and commuters, the rush hour should be a smoother time as DriveBC announced shortly before 12:30 p.m. that the incident was cleared.
It still may take time for traffic to ease off, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination if you are travelling on Highway 1 or Lougheed Highway through Burnaby this afternoon.
