Highway 1 construction prompts traffic changes in Metro Vancouver

Work to widen Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley continues this summer, and drivers are being notified that traffic-pattern changes may impact overnight commutes to start the weekend.
The Government of B.C. announced that overnight traffic-pattern changes are planned for Highway 1 between Glover Road and 248th Street as part of the widening and upgrade of the highway through the Lower Mainland.
Drivers are warned that Westbound Highway 1 lane diversions will be in place on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 8:30 p.m. until 7 a.m.
“The diversions will implement a highway crossover to allow traffic to flow in both directions in the westbound and then eastbound highway lanes,” said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in a release.
“During the diversions, the exits to 232nd Street will be closed. The on-ramps to Highway 1 will remain open. Work is weather-dependent, so the exact timing of the diversions could shift.”

Just a few days later, on Monday, June 29, Eastbound Highway 1 lane diversions will occur from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. The exit to 232nd Street will close at 7:30 p.m.
According to the Ministry, the closures are to facilitate crews to finish concrete deck pours on the new 232nd Street overpass, a key part of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program.
“A reduced speed limit of 80 km/h will be in place,” added the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“Drivers are asked to use caution, obey signage and traffic-control personnel, watch for roadside workers, and allow for additional travel time through the area when diversions are underway.”

The latest construction work is part of Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said online that the project will improve safety, reliability and capacity between 216th Street in Langley through to Chilliwack.
A wider highway will also enable the Government of BC to add improvements like HOV/EV lanes both east and westbound, bus-on-shoulder lanes in each direction, truck climbing lanes, and a truck staging area.
