Giant hairy spiders turn Yaletown plaza into an arachnophobe's nightmare

You might want to look up before settling in for a coffee at Helmcken Plaza.
Giant spiders have taken over the in-street public plaza in Downtown Vancouver’s Yaletown district with long, hairy legs dangling above unsuspecting visitors.

The seasonal invasion comes courtesy of the Yaletown Business Improvement Association, which installed the decorations this week, a full month ahead of Halloween 2026.

The oversized arachnids hang from cables and strings of lights criss-crossing the plaza, creating a creepy canopy above its colourful FIFA World Cup mural pavement, picnic tables, and umbrellas.
Framed by the surrounding brick buildings, the display gives the pedestrian space a spooky new look.
More spiders cling to the railings, while some are tucked itself beneath the table umbrellas — ready to give anyone sitting down a surprise when they glance up.
Consider it an early start to spooky season, with plenty of photo opportunities for anyone comfortable sharing the frame with a few extra legs.
Helmcken Plaza is regularly activated by the local business improvement association, with seasonal changes to its public art installation throughout the year.
The plaza spans a short vehicle-free segment of Helmcken Street between Hamilton and Mainland streets (located next to Analog Coffee, Earl’s Restaurant, and Yaletown Brewery, and near SkyTrain’s Yaletown-Roundhouse Station). It was permanently closed a few years ago to create a pedestrian-oriented space.
