Giving Fido a human name is the top trend of the year, according to new statistics released by Rover.com which has just released its list of the most popular dog names of 2015.

For male dogs, Max, Charlie and Buddy took top honours, while Bella, Lucy and Daisy ranked tops among females.

This year’s top 10 list saw the addition of Duke and Sadie, and the removal of Jake and Sophie.

It says 49% of dogs now have human names, up from 19.88% just two years ago.

Pop culture also played a role in the names people chose for their pooches. Names from the Hunger Games franchise, including Effie, Prim, Cinna and Katniss, are up 10%

Luna, Harry and Dobby, names from Harry Potter, are also up 10 per cent, with the company giving props to the creative owners who named their pooches “Harry Pawter” and “Hairy Potter.”

The most hotly-anticipated film of the year also appeared in dog names: Chewbacca/Chewie, Luke and Leia of Star Wars fame are also up five per cent overall. Dogs named after Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Twilight characters are trending downwards however.

Food and booze names, like ginger, pepper and Guinness, were the third most popular category, said Rover.com.
