Heavy rainfall warning declared for Metro Vancouver: up to 70 mm expected tonight

An approaching potent Pacific frontal system is expected to bring more heavy rainfall to the Metro Vancouver region later today and tonight.

Environment Canada has declared a heavy rainfall warning as the system is expected to dump amounts of between 50 to 70 mm in the North Shore and Howe Sound area. Less significant volumes are expected for the rest of the region.

This comes after Monday’s storm, which created property damaging floods and rockfalls in the upper areas of North Vancouver’s Lynn Valley neighbourhood. Approximately 86 mm of rainfall was recorded in these areas causing creeks and culverts to overflow into streets, homes and a high school.

More localized flooding is possible tonight within the North Shore’s runoff prone areas and other low-lying areas in the region. The ground is already saturated from consecutive storms and is unable to absorb anymore water.
