New Vancouver restaurant specializing in steak frites to open this week

We were sad to see longtime West End staple MDG close its doors earlier this summer, but as the story goes, one door closes… another one opens.

The next eatery to set up shop at 847 Denman St.? Handson Steak and Frites, a new steakhouse concept. This fresh spot popped on our radar with a moody Instagram account and some sleek branding that caught our attention a few weeks back.

Upon reaching out, the concept’s owner, Chef Kyle, told us it was all hands on deck to fine-tune the experience, something we’re looking forward to checking out for ourselves soon when the restaurant opens on Aug. 8.

“At the heart of Handson is our dedication to the perfect cut of steak and to the rituals that make each meal memorable,” Chef Kyle tells Dished.

Handson only sources prime, sustainably raised beef. The restaurant says it oversees everything from “the butchery and seasoning at your table to the final torch finish.”

Steaks here will be cooked with “a spin on classic techniques.” That starts with pan-searing, butter-basting, and rapid-fire torching. There will also be live finishing stations for diners to witness the final touches before their eyes.

In terms of the menu, we’re told to expect a simple and classic steak frites (naturally) alongside a thoughtful wine list.

While we didn’t get all the details on the new West End establishment, Chef Kyle said his goal with this new restaurant is to connect with other like-minded professionals.

“I also envision Handson as a gathering place for my fellow industry creatives. During winter, our open kitchen becomes a communal workshop where chefs and artisans unite to swap stories, test new ideas, and simply cook for the joy of it.”

“It’s this spirit of collaboration and the warmth of sharing a meal that breathed life into the Handson concept.”
