World's largest Canada flag atop Grouse Mountain removed after two-month run for FIFA World Cup

All good things come to an end — and that includes the world’s largest Canadian flag displayed on the mountains that form a backdrop to the Metro Vancouver region.

As of daylight this morning, the enormous red-and-white flag is no longer visible on the barren ski slopes of Grouse Mountain Resort.

Upon inquiry, Grouse Mountain Resort told Daily Hive Urbanized that the flag was removed Monday evening, at the end of the B.C. Day long weekend, when optimal weather conditions also allowed crews to safely take it down.

Its removal concludes a two-month temporary installation that could be seen from across the Lower Mainland.

“We’re currently exploring options and are committed to adhering to the guidance of the Canadian Heritage Foundation to ensure the flag is handled in a dignified manner,” said Grouse Mountain Resort spokesperson Emily Leak, when asked whether the flag could make a temporary return during future summer seasons.

The flag was first installed on June 2, 2026, just ahead of the FIFA World Cup, to show support for the Canadian men’s national soccer team as Vancouver welcomed visitors from around the world.

It was installed on The Cut ski run and spanned approximately the size of two football fields or the length of two station platforms on SkyTrain’s Expo/Millennium system, the record-setting flag measures 160 metres (525 ft.) in length and 80 metres (262 ft.) in width, surpassing the previous largest Canadian flag, which measured 140 metres (489 ft.) by 70 metres (230 ft.).

This gives the flag an area of 12,800 sq. metres (about 138,000 sq. ft.) — roughly twice the area of two official FIFA-sized soccer pitches put together. It was manufactured by Vancouver-based Blast Media Print, which stitched multiple sections together to create a single flag for transport to the mountaintop.

The flag was transported up the mountain using a back access road, called Mountain Highway, by truck and trailer. It weighed roughly 3,000 lb. and required the coordinated efforts of more than 70 people to unfurl.

This claim of the world’s largest Canada flag was officially confirmed by Guinness World Records on June 3, 2026. It was an unofficial installation related to the FIFA World Cup.

As of today, most FIFA World Cup-related installations (dressings, decorations, and signage) — both official and unofficial — have come down. But the transformation of Science World’s geodesic dome into a giant adidas Trionda, the tournament’s official match soccer ball, will remain in place for another month through Sept. 7, 2026, the end of the Labour Day long weekend. Its removal is timed after the conclusion of the Soccer & Technology: The Exhibition from the FIFA Museum inside Science World.
