Another round of Corus layoffs has affected Global News, with a total of 45 people losing their jobs across B.C. and Alberta.
Daily Hive has confirmed the job losses through Unifor and Corus directly.
The news began making waves online yesterday evening, as some well-known B.C. journalists were discussing the news on social media.
Corus told Daily Hive that the cuts amounted to “difficult but necessary changes to create a more sustainable future for the company and our News division.”
Interestingly, the last few stories related to Corus layoffs that Daily Hive has reported on featured the same quote: “difficult but necessary changes.”

“We are applying new workflows and ways of working, using the latest technology that will enable us to pave the way forward for the future of Global News. As a result, certain roles within some stations have been impacted,” Corus’ statement continued.
Unifor’s statement differed significantly from the one we received from Corus.
“The most recent Global News layoffs are a devastating blow to local news across the country and to our democracy,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne in an email to Daily Hive.
“We will support our members through this difficult and uncertain time.”
Unifor told Daily Hive that in addition to the 45 jobs lost in B.C. and Alberta, one job was cut in the Eastern region, and of the layoffs, 26 people were journalists.
“I somehow made it 10 years”
Layoffs in journalism and media have become routine over the past several years. One well-known, award-winning Global News online journalist, Simon Little, shared his thoughts about the layoffs on Bluesky, reflecting on that reality.
It’s incredible I somehow made it 10 years in the news biz without being laid off but my luck ran out today. Sad to see a quality team torn apart. Spare a thought for your local journos who are ever being asked to do more with less, especially if you’re tempted to dunk on the MSM.

In response to his post, many, including journalists and reporters from competing publications, shared their condolences on Bluesky in a mixture of support and anger.
Corus’ statement concluded that it was committed to “providing information” to its audiences and that it was dedicated to upholding its responsibility as a trusted source of news.
