Ski Japan's best slopes with the ultimate girls' adventure getaway

Making fresh tracks through powder, gliding through pillows of snow, dipping past trees in a winter wonderland — skiing is a magical activity.

If you’re an experienced skier (intermediate or advanced) and are looking to take your skills to the next level, Girls Do Ski’s upcoming 7-day ski trip is the perfect opportunity. Designed specifically for adventurous ladies, it’s the latest excuse to grab the girls and plan a trans-Pacific getaway.

And not only will you get to be in the company of girl power (or should we say girl powder?) in a male-dominated industry, but you’ll also get the chance to experience Japow. We’re talking about Japanese powder, people — arguably the finest snow in the whole world.

The Girls Do Ski Japan trip is taking place from January 12 to 20 in Hakuba, a breathtaking village in the Japanese Alps, just outside Nagano. It will be led by professional skier and Girls Do Ski founder, Leah Evans, with the assistance of an Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) ski guide. With help from the pros, experienced skiers will be able to ramp up their ski skills, both mentally and physically. In the words of Evans, “The mental work is unique to our program. This is the key to unlocking ladies’ potential.”

Evans, who learned to ski when she was just five-years-old and started the program 12 years ago when she was 19, says she “wanted to see more spaces for like-minded women to connect.”

When asked about why women’s ski programs are important, Evans says, “When it’s all women, it becomes a safe and encouraging space to realize your potential — on and off skis.”

Evans will provide private coaching as she takes skiers through avalanche rescue training, touring through lesser-known powder “stashes” in the Hakuba area and the Japanese Alps’ backcountry. “We all learn when we’re comfortable and trust someone to help us push or explore our comfort zones,” she adds.

Although skiing is the main focus, the travellers also get to take advantage of the incredible Japanese culture during the trip. Whether it’s zenning out in tranquil hot springs called “onsens” or consuming plentiful amounts of ramen, we can’t think of a cooler location for a getaway — or a more fitting location to expand your mind, both mentally and spiritually.

In the words of Evans herself, “This truly is the trip of a lifetime — from the people, to the food, onsens (hot springs), and the snow. I’m looking forward to connecting with all the ladies who join the trip and working with them to improve their skiing level and introducing them to all of the wonders of skiing in the Hakuba valley.”
