Friday Facts: Dubai Creek a Clone of Vancouver’s False Creek

As much as we in Vancouver are amazed by the condo boom that has been ongoing for the last few years it pales in comparison to what is going on in the desert Emirate of Dubai. However, a closer look will reveal that Vancouver’s influence in the world of architecture is far reaching as the urban planners of Dubai have taken downtown Vancouver’s skinny towers with townhouse podium bases (see Vancouverism) and put approximately 40,000 condo units in a development called Dubai Marina.

The boys of Concord Pacific have their fingerprints all over this project in the desert as they were brought in for their expertise. Within this development is Dubai Creek, their version of False Creek right in the middle of the desert. The resemblance is uncanny, right down to the hand rails (see photo above). The only difference, the “False Creek” in Dubai is lined with shops and restaurants, making it a more lively place. Wish we had that here.
