Where to watch FREE outdoor movies in Metro Vancouver this summer

There are plenty of fun activities in Metro Vancouver to take advantage of this summer, and outdoor movies are one of our favourites.

Whether you’re looking for comedy, action, or a thriller, you’re sure to find something to watch in several cities in the Lower Mainland. So grab a blanket, popcorn, and some friends to join you.

Here’s a checklist of the recurring events where you can watch outdoor movies this summer. We’ll update it as more are announced!

Fresh Air Cinema (Outdoor Movies BC/Facebook)

What: Hundreds of people will gather every Tuesday from July 8 to Aug. 26 for Canada’s largest outdoor movie series. You can watch a curated lineup of Hollywood hits and family favourites on the giant 40-foot inflatable movie screen.

Vancouver Civic Theatre’s Sunset Cinema

What: Movie lovers are invited to šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (formerly QET Plaza) outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre every Wednesday in August for a variety of great outdoor films.

Bring a chair or a blanket and pillows to sit on and enjoy Shrek on Aug. 6, The Wild Robot on Aug. 13, Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark on Aug. 20, and Mean Girls on Aug. 27.

Summer Cinema in Burnaby

What: A long-running fresh-air film series is returning to Burnaby this summer, and it’s packed with favourites the whole family can enjoy.

The fun kicks off with A Minecraft Movie on Aug. 15 at Civic Plaza and Dog Man on Aug. 16 at Confederation Park. Then make plans to check out other family-friendly flicks at both locations throughout the rest of the month.

Deckchair Cinema at The Polygon Gallery

The Polygon Gallery

What: The Polygon Gallery’s Deckchair Cinema is an open-air film series featuring music and entertainment, drinks from Strathcona Beer Company, and more.

Admission to Deckchair Cinema is by donation, courtesy of BMO Financial Group, and includes entrance to access Polygon Gallery’s summer exhibition Star Witnesses, which is on view until Sept. 8

Outdoor Movie Nights in Surrey

What: Recreation Surrey, Community Arts and Surrey Libraries are teaming up for summer outdoor movie nights at Clayton Community Centre. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and grab some popcorn to enjoy while watching Encanto on July 25 and Bolt on Aug. 22. There will also be pre-show live entertainment and food trucks on site.

Cinema under the Stars in Port Coquitlam

What: Port Coquitlam is transforming Evergreen Park into an outdoor theatre in July and August. Bring the family to enjoy all-ages faves like Encanto and The Princess Bride on a giant silver screen.

When: July 12 and 26, Aug. 9 and 23, 2025

What: Every Thursday evening until Aug. 14, Downtown Van will inflate a large 33-foot screen at the north plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery for family-friendly Summer Movie Nights.

This summertime tradition will see a massive crowd of moviegoers watch their favourite flicks under the stars, and there will be plenty of fun before the screening starts.

Outdoor Movie Nights in North Vancouver

What: Movie nights are some of the best times we get to spend with family, and this summer, you can enjoy some of your favourites outdoors on the North Shore for free. The City of North Vancouver is bringing back Sunset Cinema to The Shipyards every Wednesday from July 30 to Aug. 27. Films include Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, The Fast and the Furious, and Wicked.

Additional movie nights will be held at various locations around the city and can be found online.
